TURN MOTHER’S DAY INTO A WEEK OF THOUGHTFUL GESTURES.
Share
While Mother’s Day is a great time to show the mothers in your life that you appreciate them, one day is simply not enough. Supporting the mothers in our lives should be an intentional act of love and gratitude that comes around more than once a year. Putting this into practice looks different for everyone, but we can all start by making this Mother’s Day a week-long affair. From car detailing to giving them some time alone, we hope you can find some ideas here on how to make this Mother’s Week truly memorable.
1. CLEAN THE HOUSE (AND DO THE LAUNDRY WHILE YOU’RE AT IT)
For moms, especially those with toddlers or preschoolers, keeping up with messes can feel like an endless battle, and don’t get us started with the never-ending supply of little tiny clothes to wash and fold. Taking the time to deep clean the house (or get it done professionally) and do the laundry is a considerate act that busy moms would truly appreciate.
2. TAKE CARE OF DINNER…AND THE DISHES
Making dinner and doing the dishes may seem like a minor gesture, but moms are constantly planning and making decision after decision. An evening of simply enjoying dinner and going about her night without having to plan, prepare, and clean would make a lot of moms happy.
3. CAR DETAILING
A lot of moms want their cars detailed as a gift, and it's not that surprising. Being a personal chauffeur to kids surely leaves its mark, from crumbs and spills to whatever else is hiding in those seat crevices. Imagine her bliss at getting into a car that doesn’t look as chaotic as life often feels.
4. GIVE THEM EXTRA TIME TO SLEEP IN
New moms/mothers of newborns need a lot of support, and yet, sleep deprivation is almost always synonymous with the early stages of motherhood. A few hours of extra peaceful sleep would go a long way, so let her know that you’ll handle all her morning duties and the night wakings (if any).
5. ALONE TIME!!!
Mothers dedicate so much of their lives to taking care of others and carving out moments for themselves can feel like an unattainable luxury. Offering her some uninterrupted alone time allows her to recharge, reflect, or simply indulge in activities she loves but rarely gets to enjoy. Whether it’s booking her a hotel stay for a night, setting up a relaxing spa-like experience at home, or ensuring she has the house to herself for a few hours, this gesture shows understanding and appreciation for all that she does.
6. ZERO RESPONSIBILITIES DAY
A mom on Reddit hilariously summed this up as being able to hang out with her family for a day as a stranger just tagging along, enjoying everyone’s company, without any of the work. Being a mom is a full-time job with no days off, and having to be constantly accessible to your kids can be both mentally and physically exhausting. So give her a day where you don’t ask and just do. Clean up the messes, break up the fights, change the dirty shirt (or diaper), feed everyone, and put the kids to bed.
7. TELL THEM HOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE THEM
A great deal of moms say they don’t feel acknowledged in their own homes, and that’s heartbreaking. This Mother’s Day, skip the generic store-bought card messages and intentionally tell the mothers in your life how much you appreciate their sacrifices, love, and unwavering support. It doesn’t need to be grand, just honestly thought out.
8. GIVE MEANINGFUL GIFTS
When choosing a gift for a mom this week, go beyond the flowers and chocolate; consider something that reflects her personality, values, or passions. It could be a personalised keepsake, like a custom piece of jewelry or something handmade, like a scrapbook filled with cherished memories. Side note: You can just ask them for a wish list because, in some instances, what they want is not what you think they want. The key is to show them that some thought went into choosing their gift and to recognise that they have lives and interests outside of motherhood.
9. PLAN SOME ACTIVITIES TO DO TOGETHER
There are countless ideas out there of activities to do on (or in this case, leading up to) Mother’s Day. Whether you settle on a picnic, family road trip, or movie night, the goal is to spend quality time together, with no distractions, doing something you all enjoy… that she didn’t have to plan.
10. KEEP MOTHER’S DAY A (NUCLEAR) FAMILY AFFAIR
While this may not be a unanimous take, many moms say they would like to keep Mother’s Day celebrations about themselves and their kids. It’s worthwhile to consider having an intimate day as a family and postponing that brunch or visit with the grandparents to Grandparents Day. Again, moms have different needs and wants so it’s important to try and gauge how best they would like to spend their day.
